Nigerian musicians and live performances

I am always amazed when I watch a live performance and it turns out to be just some guy holding a microphone and miming to the sounds of a dj. Don’t be mistaken, its not that I enjoy these performances. Each time, I am left with utter disbelief at what the music industry has turned into.

In the not so distant past, Nigerian music was largely characterized by live bands and heavy instrumentation with the likes of Fela Kuti, victor Olaiya, Sunny Ade, Oliver de Coque, Sunny Okosuns, thrilling fans across the country with their vibes. It will be interesting to note that a lot of these artists are still very relevant to day either dead or alive. Nigerian music is very percussion heavy and this has defined us for a long time. Someone once said that technology has done more harm than good to music. Technology has made a lot of our artists very lazy.

The beauty of a live band in a performance cannot be over emphasized. For starters, it helps the artist connect better with his/her audience. This is because you can change the mood and tone of your music at any time based on the audience reaction. A live band also sounds a lot better. Live drums are a lot more versatile than sequenced beats which are very monotonous and boring. Infact most of Fela Kuti’s recordings were all performed live in the studio.

A few artists today like 2face and Soundsultan have always insisted on performing with live bands for their performances and need to be commended. I feel there is need to reawaken our artists and move Nigerian music forward, so that the best of Nigerian music will not be behind us.

Throw Back Thursday: Ras Kimono, 35 years and still going

Ras Kimono is an African Raggae singer from Nigeria.  According to him “The name Ras is a title and every African is entitled to bear it. It is an old American word, which means “head of the house.” So, every blackman is the head of his home. The word, Kimono, derived from Kimumu, which means, “what is wrong with the society?” But because of easy pronunciation, I had to change it to Kimono. Many people have told me that Kimono means Japanese wears. But I replied that mine means, what is wrong with the society”.

In the 1980s, the Nigerian music industry saw Ras Kimono, a reggae exponent, whose albums, “Under Pressure” and “Rumba Style,” literally set the nation on fire.

Ras Kimono served a long apprenticeship on the Nigerian music circuit, experimenting with a number of styles, before making his late 80s breakthrough as a reggae singer. Together with his Massive Dread Reggae Band, Kimono released his debut album, Under Pressure, in 1989. Accompanied by the popular single, ‘Rum-Bar Stylee’, this revealed both a Jamaican and native African influence. At that time, his name was on the lips of many, but he experienced a lull. Although, the musician is no longer releasing albums, as he used to, he is still very much involved in music. His strongly polemical lyrics produced album sales of over 100, 000 copies, and a fervent following for his advocacy of social change. What’s Gwan proved even more successful, with the topics selected including legalization of marijuana, and the need for Africans to intellectually repel colonialism and its arbitrary boundaries between tribes. Most controversially, he was not averse to naming directly those in power he saw as synonymous with backdoor imperialism.

Ras Kimono who has 4 daughters, has seven albums, performed in many major events said ‘I don’t smoke marijuana neither do i do drugs nor alcohol’
