Olamide has responded to critics who believe his song ‘Science Student’ promotes and encourages the use of drugs and illicit substances.
Just recently, former Edo State gubernatorial aspirant Pedro Obaseki in a video that has gone viral accused the singer of eulogizing drug abuse in his latest song “Science Student.”
However, the singer has voiced out that his song is never intended to promote, but stop drug abuse.
Olamide wrote:
“Since the release of #ScienceStudent, the support has been massive. As you are all sharing, dancing, singing along to this relatable music of mine, I want you all to take some time to reflect on the subject, say no to drug abuse. Don’t abuse alcohol. stop mixing what you don’t know about. Live responsibly and drink responsibly. Don’t aspire the ‘highness state’ but a state of purpose fulfillment and passion discovery. Together let’s put an end to drug abuse and save as many lives as possible. The video will be out soon and I can’t wait for you all to see it. #SayNoToDrugAbuse #DrinkResponsibly #ScienceStudent.”

Former Edo State Governorship aspirant, Pedro Obaseki, has called for the ban of Olamide’s song, “Science Student.”
He claims the song encourages the abuse of drugs and other related substances by Nigerian youths. The politician made this call in a video that has since been trending online, with a lot of Nigerians reacting to the politician’s claim.
Recall that last year, NBC found Olamide’s “Wo,” and “Wavy Level” offensive. Again, last week, popular actress Lala Akindoju openly frowned at the way Nigerian musicians seem to be promoting and encouraging the use of hard drugs and substances in the name of music and dance. Although the actress made no mention of Olamide nor the song “Science Student” it was obvious she actually referred to the song.
Following major outcries on social media, “Science Student” might soon fizzle out of the airwaves.

There’s this new music trend that seems to be taking over Nigeria’s music scene at the moment. It’s the Shakushaku dance which came out of the song Legbegbe by a guy called realself Mr real. It goes something like … Oya fun won legbegbe , iPhone one legbegbe … and follows with a dance step that has strong connotations with gangnam style by psy, albeit an African interpretation.
Apart from being a dance step, it’s also a unique beat which a few major artists have latched onto now. Olamide released his version of this new genre and titled it Science Student. Reminisce also created his own interpretation, titling it “problem”. It seems that this new genre is quite heavily rooted in Yoruba street rap as this forms a major part of the sequence. The beat is quite uptempo and doesn’t have much melody to it.
The movement has sparked off a series of online dance competitions with several people putting their own twists and nuances to the dance steps. There’s currently a top ten dance competition going on, sparked by Olamide’s Science student song.
The big question on my mind is will this trend propel the originator – realself Mr Real – into mainstream prominence, with more hits and followups or is this a one hit wonder that will soo n face away with the times? Already, Shakushaku is heavily associated with Olamide and his Science Student song and one only hopes the original song Legbegbe doesn’t get hijacked. Let me know what you think in the comments.
