Stories of Artists Fighting Vision Loss to Do Better

There is no cure for age-related macular degeneration but that hasn’t stopped artists from painting and making sculptures. Georgia O’Keeffe was driving in her hometown New Mexico in 1964 when a cloud appeared in her eye balls. She found out eight years later that she was suffering from age-related macular degeneration, a disorder that damages the macula leading to central vision blindness.

While you might love playing your favorite games on Betway Nigeria, taking a look at these artists’ work and their dedication to their work is surely going to blow you away.

A Look at the Statistics

More than 30 percent people over the age of 75 years suffer from macular degeneration, while those above 60 years are at high risk. Losing vision is not only a fundamental loss for artists but also a loss of self expression. Different people go through different experiences after being diagnosed with macular degeneration including contrast sensitivity and loss of color vision, which makes it difficult to pay attention to details. When French artist Edgar Degas suffered from age-related macular degeneration, he started using more clay and pastels in his work.

According to University of Cincinnati, artists continue to demonstrate their style even after partial vision loss. The Philip M Meyers, Jr Memorial Gallery has a showcase of 50 paintings, drawings, and sculptures of eight contemporary artists before and after they suffered from the degenerative disorder. Some of the artists displayed at the gallery are Serge Hollerbach, Lennart Anderson, David Levine, and Hedda Sterne. The gallery is the first one to examine works before and after loss of vision.

Curators Brian Schumacher and A’Dora Phillips initiated the program through e Vision and Art Project and also has a running list of artists from around the world who are diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration. The two curators also interview affected artists and whenever possible, also talk about their personal experiences. Phillips said that their project wants the public to understand age-related macular degeneration and how it affects. Their art is passion to them and they continue to pursue it despite the vision loss, so the project makes it their responsibility to make resources available to them.

Personal experiences of artists

Hedda Sterne found out at the age of 83 years that was suffering from age-related macular degeneration. She lost her ability to see colors five years later but still continued making monochromatic sketches using oil pastel, Wite Out, and graphite. Despite her loss, her post macular degenerative state displayed faint smudgings and delicate lines that display her form of absolute awareness.

William Thon, a landscape painter, lost his color vision in 1991, but continued making paintings using black and white ink and used his fingers to draw shapes creating dramatic stains and strokes, that he had been drawing for years. When you closely observe his paintings, you can see faint fingertips on the drawing. Most of these artists were seen using their memory while drawing.

Olamide Responds to Critics on His Song ‘Science Student’

Olamide has responded to critics who believe his song ‘Science Student’ promotes and encourages the use of drugs and illicit substances.

Just recently, former Edo State gubernatorial aspirant Pedro Obaseki in a video that has gone viral accused the singer of eulogizing drug abuse in his latest song “Science Student.”

However, the singer has voiced out that his song is never intended to promote, but stop drug abuse.

Olamide wrote:

“Since the release of #ScienceStudent, the support has been massive. As you are all sharing, dancing, singing along to this relatable music of mine, I want you all to take some time to reflect on the subject, say no to drug abuse. Don’t abuse alcohol. stop mixing what you don’t know about. Live responsibly and drink responsibly. Don’t aspire the ‘highness state’ but a state of purpose fulfillment and passion discovery. Together let’s put an end to drug abuse and save as many lives as possible. The video will be out soon and I can’t wait for you all to see it.  #SayNoToDrugAbuse #DrinkResponsibly #ScienceStudent.”

Edo State Politician Pedro Obaseki – “Olamide’s ‘Science Student’ Should Be Banned.”

Former Edo State Governorship aspirant, Pedro Obaseki, has called for the ban of Olamide’s song, “Science Student.”

He claims the song encourages the abuse of drugs and other related substances by Nigerian youths. The politician made this call in a video that has since been trending online, with a lot of Nigerians reacting to the politician’s claim.

Recall that last year, NBC found Olamide’s “Wo,” and “Wavy Level” offensive. Again, last week, popular actress Lala Akindoju openly frowned at the way Nigerian musicians seem to be promoting and encouraging the use of hard drugs and substances in the name of music and dance. Although the actress made no mention of Olamide nor the song “Science Student” it was obvious she actually referred to the song.

Following major outcries on social media, “Science Student” might soon fizzle out of the airwaves.

The biggest surprise of the night was the reunion of  the defunct music group Mo’Hits. Davido said he spent over two months pushing for it to happen, and it did. Led by Don Jazzy, the group comprising of D’banj, Wande Coal, D’Prince, Dr Sid and Kay Switch made a comeback. September Last year, Wizkid performed a sold-out show at the world’s famous music venue – Royal Albert Hall, London. While Wizkid wasn’t the first African artist to sell out the iconic venue, as many claimed, he became the first afrobeats artist to do so.

The concert was streamed live by Boiler Room TV, who recently released a documentary on Wizkid which highlights the superstar’s journey to stardom.

The documentary titled, From Lagos to London shows clips from his Royal Albert Hall performance, Felabration performance as well as an interview with Boiler Room. Don Jazzy Gives a Hilarious Response to Wizkid on How “Booty Call” Was Made

Did you remember the street jam, “Booty Call” by Mo-Hits back in the day? I was a “spiricoco” girl back then, but this song always got me tapping my feet once it hits my auditory system. My roommate played the song umpteen times that I learnt the lyrics unconsciously.

Nigerian superstar, Wizkid recently took to his twitter handle to asked Don Jazzy and the Mo-Hits crew how this “jam from before before” was made. Don Jazzy replied with a true but funny response that has gone viral on the social media.
