In a recent episode of The Africa Music Law Show, veteran Nigerian broadcaster, Emma Ugolee claimed that the defunct Mo’Hits Records owner D’banj and Don Jazzy caused the increasing rise of payola in the country today.
Payola which is described as a dangerous virus affecting the growth of the music industry around the world is an illegal practice of payment by music recording companies for the broadcast of a song which is then presented as part of the normal day’s broadcast, without prior announcement to its broadcast.
According to Emma Ugolee, payola was was already a growing practice in the country but the arrival of the defunct Mo’hits duo led to its sharp rise.
“I tell D’banj and Don Jazzy, these are the first two people who turned… It was starting to grow slowly but when these boys came in from London, they turned it all around.”
The broadcaster further stated that the practice has caused a lot of damage to the Nigerian music industry as musicians now give money and other gifts to on-air presenters to have their song aired.
“They now started carving designer bags, giving to presenters, bringing huge sums of money and then you know they were changing Pounds to Naira, putting it in the pockets of these presenters”.
Emma Ugolee also accused other artists like Davido, Kcee and Banky W of perpetrating such act. Payola, due to its wide practice, has become part of the standard promotion campaign for artistes who are hoping for breakthrough in the Nigerian music industry.
