Kennis Music Is Still Relevant – Kenny Ogungbe Reveals

Founder of Kennis Music, Kenny Ogungbe, popularly known as Baba Keke, has revealed in an interview with Sunday Scoop why Kennis Music has not been active in the Nigerian music industry recently.

According to Baba Keke, there is nothing wrong with Kennis Music, insisting that he and Dayo deliberately didn’t sign any artiste in the last six years.

He said;

“Kennis Music has decided to look at another aspect of the entertainment business. We do not want to promote more than one artiste anymore. We had artistes that didn’t want us to renew their contracts and we were also not interested in working with them any longer. Jaywon is a good example.”

“We wanted to stop music promotion so that we can focus on our radio station. If we sign an artiste, we have to do promotions, take care of his welfare, do good videos and other things. We are still relevant with Joe El and we are happy with him. But this does not mean music production has ended for Kennis Music.”

Kenny Ogungbe who recently celebrated the first year anniversary of his radio station, Kennis FM, revealed he intentionally didn’t speak on the allegations that Kennis Music was cheating artistes.

He said;

“The management fees we were collecting on 2Baba was 15 per cent and they said we had eaten all his money. I heard all the things people said about us. Once you are a progressive person, they will say ugly things about you”.

We Didn’t Collect Money From Tekno – Danfo Drivers

Mountain Black of the popular Music group, Danfo Drivers have revealed in an interview that they didn’t collect money from Tekno to settle dispute with them.

Recall that Danfo Drivers have recently called out Tekno for remaking their hit song, Kponlogo, without properly seeking permission from them.

While speaking with GoldmyneTV, Mountain Black revealed that they have forgiven Tekno after he paid them a visit in Abuja on Wednesday. He however noted almost immediately that they didn’t collect money from him as compensation.

He said;

“We didn’t collect any money from Tekno; you can ask him. The deed has been done; we cannot reverse it any longer. He planned to release the video of the song last week.

He asked if he could go ahead and we gave him our permission. But I told him we could do a remix later.”

Mountain Black said they wouldn’t have spoken out angrily if he had treated them well. According to him, they had earlier agreed that they would see at the Eko Hotel in Lagos after the Headies Award but he refused to pick their calls.

“Why would you release a job without telling the owner of the song? When he called that he wanted to see us, I told him we were busy but we should meet at the Headies and he said it was okay.

We were invited for the Headies at the Eko Hotel and he lives very close.

On that day, we called him and he was not picking up. That was why I granted an interview where I said we were looking for Tekno.

“Last week Wednesday, he called that he was coming to see us in Abuja.

So, he came down to Abuja and apologised for what he did. I told him we were not interested in his money but we wanted him to work together with us as a team.”

Ace Nigerian music producer, Sarz, slammed another popular producer, K-Solo, on Twitter. It all began when K-Solo called him Sarz an ‘old man’ over his comment at the Headies Award and even suggested that he gives way for younger producers.

MyMusic Song Review: Afrodisiac by Wizkid ft Ycee – Another Hit or A Complete Miss?

Ace Nigerian Superstar singer, Wizkid also known as Starboy recently dropped three hot singles with ‘Aphrodisiac’ being among the released tunes while others being ‘Lagos Vibes’ and ‘High grade’.

Just when we all thought we had seen it all about the singer, he surprised us with  this fine tune which is coming just after the massive success of ‘Soco’ which features Ceeza Milli, Spotless & Terri.

The song which features another side of Wizkid’s talent and Ycee is a real soulful song that will leave ones heart in twists. He delivered the song in the most natural way making us wonder why Wizkid had shied away from singing slower songs in the past.

The beats goes too well with the rhythm of the song and the unusual drawl as he sings is what’s fascinating and interesting about Aphrodisiac.

This lovely tune that has wizkid saying “love it when i give you wicked vibes all night” can be translated to mean love or  obsession. The intro, however has to be the best part of the song.

‘Aphrodisiac’ is sure to be another massive success as this new tune is sure to awaken many hearts and spark a fresh interest in the Singer.

To jam today, you can download ‘Aphrodisiac’ here while you enjoy this new tune from Starboy himself afterwards.

MyMusic Throwback: Send Down The Rain by Majek Fashek

Today is another Thursday, a day we specially left out to not only celebrate the music industry veterans but to also enjoy a blast from the past.

Last week, we featured a song from Lagbaja and I hope we enjoyed miming and dancing to ‘Konko Below’. Without deraling too far, we will be entering into the reggae realm with ‘Send Down The Rain’ by veteran reggae singer, Majek Fashek.

Reggae music is considered a spirit of its own and as we all travel down memory lane once again, i want you to switch on that Rasta spirit, its the only way you can enjoy reggae.

Majekodunmi Fasheke better known as Majek Fashek still remains the best known and celebrated reggae artist in Nigeria. He gained entry into the hall of fame in 1988 after he released the album ‘Prisoner of Concience ‘ which featured  the single ‘Send Down The Rain’.

‘Send down the rain’ became an instant hit which won him six PMAN Music Awards in 1989 and ever since its been regarded as an evergreen song. This song talks about sowing and reaping, reflecting the singer truthfulness at preaching with his songs. He clearly appeared to be on a mission like a prophet would to deliver series of messages from God.

Majek Fashek also known as ‘the rainmaker, a name he earned after releasing ‘send down the rain’ hit a lot of nails on the head with this song having unique lyrics. The song was sang and written with great insight as Majek Fashek delivers each message like one would cry in the wilderness.

Altogether, ‘Send Down The Rain’ is an evergreen blast from the past and i am sure you will enjoy this tune with great pleasure.

So, all you will just do is download the song, switch onto the Reggae spirit and enjoy this blast from the past!

MyMusic Playlist: Top 7 Choice Songs – This Month

This is the month of April and I bet you all noticed that we gradually are getting to the middle of the year. I trust that music is one of those things that have kept you sane all this while because it’s been same for me.

Despite the Nigerian music industry producing some bad tunes we still have some really nice tunes or should I call it good music being dished out left, right and center, fueling our vibe as we consume it hook, line and sinker.

Without wasting too much of time, here are my top choice song for this month which you are sure to enjoy if you decide to take a cue from me…and here we go…

7. Mind – DMW ft Davido, Mayorkun, Perruzzi, Dremo

I guess the beats of ‘Mind’ is what caught my attention, although the lyrics are so on point as it’s obvious the DMW crew have been working hard. This tune currently is one of the best songs to jam with be it on the road, school, home or work. Enjoy!

6. Ada – DJ Ecool ft Davido

‘Ada’ by DJ Ecool is a song enjoying massive airplay as many Nigerians are grooving with this tune. The intro also is just dope. The featuring of Davido definitely contributed to its success. Altogether, this tune is a nice song to dance to at anytime, please make it Shaku-shaku style.

5. Believe – Ric Hassani ft Falz, Olamide

The extended remix of ‘Believe’ by Ric Hassani has to be the best song collaboration presently. The presence of Falz and Olamide fine-tuned it to be a success.

4. Awa Love – Johnny Drille

Mavin Records Super Talented Artist, Jonny Drille dropped this beautiful song this year and it’s been one of my best. I just love the way he tells the love story in the most simple way.

3. Heya – Brymo

‘Heya’ is a call to action song with a controversial music video, but does that really matter, when the artist is busy addressing a serious matter. If you haven’t listened to this song yet all I can say to you is ‘Heya’

2. Ire – Adekunle Gold

The use of traditional drums, the beat, the storyline, the intro and every other thing about this song makes it one of the best songs coming from a Nigerian. Ire is a fine song delivered with finesse only a talented artist like Adekunle Gold can do.

1. Whatchu Doing Tonight (Remix) – Banky W ft Susu

I had finally given up on Nigerian RnB songs until i listened to this beautiful song from Banky W and his Wife Adesua Etomi also known as Susu and all I could say is ‘Waoh’. This is the best song ringing in my head.

Haven listed all my top choice songs for this month, you can download all here on MyMusic to listen and enjoy too… Either way, what do you think of my list? Drop your comments below…

MyMusic Throwback: Konko Below by Lagbaja

Today is another beautiful Thursday for us to reminisce, last week MyMusic featured “Imagine That” by popular music band group, Styl Plus. However, today we will be featuring another blast from the past from veteran Nigeran musician titled “Konko Below.”

“Konko Below” was off one of Lagbaja’s album “We” which he released in the year 2000. The song became one of the finest tunes to listen to back in the days just as soon as it was released. The airplay was regular and it was a song well enjoyed by everyone, without age limitation.

“Konko Below” had a danceable beat with fine vocals of Lagbaja himself as he delivered the lyrics with so much finesse. The use of the traditional drums and the saxophone sounds did a great justice in making the song an overall success.

The song “Konko Below” is a song done in both the Yoruba and English language. The song generally encourages dancing as well as moving ones body effectively. The beautiful and gearing intro says it all just as the regular interjection helps to keep the vibe flowing till the end of the song.

Lagbaja whose birth name is Bisade Ologunde is a famous Afrobeat musician known for his prowess in playing the saxophone as well as writing great songs. He his well known with his mask, which helps in hiding his identity hence the meaning of his stage name “Lagbaja” meaning anonymosity.

He has released some other popular songs including Nothing for you; Gra gra; Feyin e; Suuru lere; Abami and Knock knock knock.

Altogether, “Konko Below” is an evergreen song that should keep you busy singing today. So just download the song, put it in play mode, sing along and dance to the tune.

Gospel Singers Group, Midnight Crew Reveals Why Groups Break up

In a recent interview with Punch, Sensational Gospel Singers group’s spokesperson, Mike Abdul, revealed how they started their journey in the music industry 15 years ago and how they almost broke in 2005. He also gave reasons as to why groups break up.

While speaking with Punch he said, “Sometime in 2005, we felt that we had spent four years together and things were looking tight and difficult for us. We decided that we should do something about it by letting everybody go. We called a meeting which was meant to disband the group but as God would have it, we found ourselves praying and after the prayer session, we did not discuss about disbanding the group but making it better. God helped us. Imagine if we had disbanded Midnight Crew in 2005, we did not know that we were going to receive a song that would make the whole nation proud in 2008. Igwe was released seven years after we formed Midnight Crew’. Having survived as a group for almost 15 years in Nigeria, Mike shared his thoughts on why music groups break up in Nigeria.”

According to him, “I think it is not just in Nigeria that groups break up, it also happens in the US. I think what has worked for us is that we respect individuality. After ten years as a group we had a meeting and we told ourselves that we can all do individual works and still be in the group. I think the problem that has occurred over the years that has not been addressed when it comes to groups is that we fail to understand that every member of the group is an individual who carries a dream of his own”

Sierra Leonean King of Bubu Music Dies At 54

Ahmed Janka Nabay, one of Sierra Leone veteran musician popularly known as the king of Bubu music was confirmed dead as he died at age 54.

He was confirmed dead by Luaka Bop Records representatives to music website Pitchfork. Nabay who became known as the king of Bubu music after taking the traditional music of the Temne people in Sierra Leone and modernizing it into an electronic dance subgenre rose to fame in the 1990’s.

However, the cause of death is not clear. Ahmed Janka Nabay became successful in his music career in Sierra Leone first when he became one of the first artists to popularize the Bubu music. The Bubu music is said to have originated in the Time regions of the country.

Ahmed Janka made his way to the United States where he worked in kitchens and did other odd jobs after the end of the civil war. Thereafter, in 2007 some of his older Bubu releases were rediscovered in America.

The singer later relocated to Brooklyn and issued the first Bubu music ever to be released commercially in the United States, the Bubu King EP, in 2010 via True Panther. He and his band the ‘Bubu Gang’, later released two full-lengths on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label: En Yay Sah (2012) and Build Music (2017).

Asa Is The Only Artist I Can Collaborate With – Brymo

Talented Nigerian artist, Olawale Ashimi better known as Brymo who just released his sixth studio album has left a lot of people speculating as he failed to feature any guest artist on the album.

He, however talked about his reason for that in an interview with BBC Yoruba on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2018.

Brymo, during the interview revealed that it is difficult to work with artistes who don’t talk about the same issues as him and Asa is the only singer he wishes to collaborate with.

According to him while speaking in the Yoruba language, he said; “I have spoken to Asa’s handlers. What remains is to set it up. She is the one person who I can collaborate. What she talks about — love, social issues, everyday issues — are things that matter to me”

“I had important things to talk about. It is hard to bring someone who doesn’t know my thought process to collaborate on such a song. Many of my colleagues collaborate because of positioning. There is so much politics involved in collaboration so I chose to sing alone. I have collaborated in the past but I was not satisfied with the outcome.”

Brymo also went further to state that most veteran indigenous musicians often “sing alone”.

“If you look at it well, many people like KSA, KWAM 1, Ayinde Barrister and other indigenous musicians hardly collaborate,” he said.“Abroad too, people like Adele, Coldplay and Bruno Mars record albums alone,” he said.

I Didn’t Sing To Get Money And Attention From Femi Otedola – Dice Ailes

Damilola Alesh, aka Dice Ailes, has been enjoying fame since he dropped the single ‘Otedola’. In the music industry today, that single is said to have paved the way for him as the song was rumored to have brought him closer to the Nigerian Icon, Otedola and his children.

However, the Chocolate City singer during an interview with Sunday scoop said he never thought about what the song will bring him as it was just coincidental.

According to him “Whatever you do, people will always have their reservations and opinions, but I didn’t do the song to get money from Otedola or to get close to his family. I was just having fun. Surprisingly, upon releasing the song, I got to meet Otedola and he gave me a lot of money. I am also close to the family members and I call him on the telephone whenever I like. I didn’t plan for all these as some people have said.”

When asked what inspired him, he explained, “Like I said earlier, I wasn’t paid to sing about Otedola. In the song, I was calling many names. I was just looking for iconic names that would bring out the best in the song. Since I was talking about money and Otedola is a billionaire, I felt I should use his name. Honestly, anything could have been the title of the song, but I settled for Otedola because it was one of the first names I mentioned while singing.”

Dice Ailes, who also released a new song, Mr. Biggs, last week, admitted that he was very excited, on recalling his first meeting with Otedola. He said “Before the song, I never had the chance to meet Otedola. But a few days after I released it, I saw him. I was just asking questions because I wanted to know many things. The first question I asked was how he made his wealth. He just laughed and told me that ‘if you are striving to get rich, you may never get rich’. Being with Otedola made me realise that you could be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it. The song is a blessing to me because it has brought me closer to some icons”.

You Don’t Need Drugs To Boost Your Creativity – Master Kraft

Masterkraft, one on Nigeria Renowned Producer has called on young artists to stay away from using drugs and alcohol to boost their creativity.

The pianist who also doubles as a songwriter revealed this in an interview with Saturday Beatz.

He said:

“I don’t think you need to enhance or boost your creativity with drugs. I believe that creativity is God-given. If you can harness your creativity without drugs, it would be good for you because you might find yourself in an environment where you would not find drugs.

I was built that way and it made me shun drugs. If I take anything, it affects my creativity; it dampens it. I can only take alcohol when I want to relax”

The award-winning producer talked about how his meeting Banky W helped in making him a success today.

According to him, the turning point in his life came after he produced a song and they had to feature a rapper. M.I was called and after he listened to it, he was amazed at the song quality and Banky W was later introduced to him. Banky W eventually promised to take him to the next level which he did and he’s forever grateful for.

This later earned Masterkraft a spot in EME where he worked for the record label and was the vocal coach for Wizkid and Skales at the time.
